The French Government has taken a decision to ban titanium dioxide because of pressure from associations and parliamentarians in France. Although initially the Minister for Economic Affairs and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, opposed the suspension of the marketing of this chemical, he was forced to change his position.
Titanium dioxide was ranked by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2006 as “probably causing cancer.” On 2 October last, the French National Assembly voted in favour of titanium dioxide and the halting of the marketing of any product containing titanium dioxide.
Journalist Roger Lenglet said that titanium dioxide is a "bomb" for human health. Adding that the particles of this chemical can be “mutant, cell-toxic and carcinogenic”.
However, the final ban will not take place before the end of April this year. The ministry led by Le Maire has asked the National Food Safety Agency (AEPD) to investigate the study of the nanoparticles of the substance. For the prohibition of titanium dioxide to be made “under legal conditions”.
This decision has received many criticisms from associations and parliamentarians. Until the official suspension arrives, a list of products containing this chemical is being prepared on the website Infonano.org.
