Solidarity campaign is launched for 19 people who have been denounced for entering Franco’s Easter in Meiras
- In 2017, several people entered the Galician Pazo of the dictator Francisco Franco to demand that the legacy stolen as a result of the fascist coup be returned to the hands of the population. A prison sentence of up to 13 years has been requested for each of them.
On August 30, 2017, left-wing and nationalist militants, trade unionists and social and cultural equalists entered the Meiras Pazo and opened two large banners demanding the return to the people of this legacy stolen by the coup by the dictator Franco.
It was a peaceful act and they left the area without any problems after being unaware by the Civil Guard. Now, Franco’s grandson, José Cristóbal Martínez-Bordiu Franco, and the philofascist foundation that bears the name of the dictator, have filed a lawsuit against 19 people, demanding a prison sentence of between 3 and 13 years –they can all be sentenced to 247 years in prison–, accusing them of forced entry into their homes, reforming “hatred” and “violence”, among other crimes.
19 de Meiras, the Franquismo nunca mais platform has launched a campaign of solidarity with the people denounced and a manifesto has been disseminated in numerous languages, including Basque, to obtain signatures. The Platform considers this to be a "barbarism" from a legal and political point of view: "Once again, we are facing an attempt to criminalize democratic rights and freedom of expression," they say in the manifesto.
The situation is even more serious for the platform, seeing that the accuser is "the family of a dictator who takes advantage of the spoils of war", as well as a foundation dedicated to the apology of fascism. The foundation should not be legal.
BNG MEP Ana Miranda spoke loudly about this in the European Parliament on 12 June, a court action against these 19 friends – including many BNG members –:
