According to the testimonies of his grandfather Alfonso XIII.ak and his father, Juan Carlos I.ak has vanished from the Spanish state. Thus, he who was king of Spain for 40 years has followed the Bourbon road: he has left the country with no hopes of returning. In a statement by the former king, he explained to his son Felipe VI that he has been transferred to a place to determine, "outside Spain", the "public repercussion" of the events of recent weeks and of "some private accounts of the past".
It is a quantity of money that the former king can have in tax havens for what he considers "causes of private life", which are investigating Swiss and Spanish courts. In fact, the State Attorney General’s Office is currently investigating three commissions, one of USD 100 million, one of EUR 120 million and another of EUR 98 million, all related to a member of the real family. On 8 June, the Public Prosecutor’s Office announced the possibility of prosecuting Juan Carlos de Borbón for the activities carried out after the abdication: the collection of commissions, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, cannot be investigated, but the laundering of those commissions carried out after their cessation can be investigated. In theory, king emeritus continues to enjoy immunity thanks to the successor pact signed in 2014.
The situation of Joan Carlos I.aren, after the abdication and withdrawal of public life, reached a turning point on 15 March. On that day, he announced that he would relinquish the legacy of his father, Philip V I.ak, and that he would be deprived of nearly EUR 200,000 a year of the amount he had previously received from his budgets. He did so in light of published information on the origin of the EUR 65 million entered in Switzerland at the Lucum Foundation in Panama, when the proceedings began to determine whether Juan Carlos I.ari had paid commissions for the construction of the high-speed train to La Meca in Saudi Arabia.
Almost two years earlier, in July 2018, the judge of the National Audience Diego de Egea summoned to declare former Police Commissioner Villarejo, after hearing recordings of a conversation that took place in London in 2015. In the interview, Corinna Larsen, who was the sentimental partner of the former king, revealed that he had accounts in Switzerland and that he charged those commissions from Saudi Arabia, among other things.
In March of this year, the statements by Larsen’s lawyer to the Swiss prosecutor Yves Bertossa were published. In them, the client received a "gift" of 65 million euros and the managers of the account of Lucca, Arturo Fasana and Dante Canonica, sent a rogatory commission to Switzerland to get the data of the alleged donation.
This information in the press made Philip VI.ak obliged to give up his father’s inheritance and to delete the budget appropriation, otherwise the current king would be the second beneficiary of the Panama foundation. The Spanish Government has expressed its respect for the decision of Juan Carlos I.aren and has underlined the "sense of exemplarity and transparency" of the current Head of State, King Felipe VI.
On July 8, the president of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, warned that the information about the king emeritus was "worrying". A week ago, however, he argued that the Royal House was going to take steps to strengthen the "transparency and exemplarity" of the institution. However, the exile of Juan Carlos I.aren only hinders the investigation process, and there is no demand in this respect, neither on the part of the Government of Spain, nor on the part of the Justice. In fact, the Public Prosecutor's Office intends to "limit or exclude criminal significance" from the events that have taken place since June 2014, that is, that the innocence of the king is defended beforehand.
According to information published in the Spanish and Catalan press, Juan Carlos I could be in the Dominican Republic. According to La Vanguardia, “the former king left the zarzuela on Sunday after writing a letter to his son and spent the night in Sanxenxo (Galicia), the town where he has sailed by sailing in the last years. On Monday morning he drove to Porto and from there he went to the Dominican Republic.” As confirmed by the medium, the intention of Juan Carlos I.aren is to stay "a few weeks" in the Casa de Campo de La Romana, and the stay will be "temporary".
