Sortu has denounced Columbus Day in the mobilizations called for October 12 and the previous days. In most of them, the protesters have burned images of the conqueror Christopher Columbus, King of Spain VI.aren, to protest the colonialism of yesterday and today.
In Pamplona, states land
Sortu has mobilized this Monday in Pamplona/Iruña with the aim of mobilizing. There, instead of burning images, the protesters tied a rope to two cardboard statues of Colón and Felipe VI.aren and threw them to the ground. Following the death of George Floyd drowned by the U.S. police, protests were unleashed around the world, many of which were shot down by citizens in tribute to local colonizers and conquerors.
In the act of Pamplona they have taken the word Africa United, Women of the Corn of Nicaraguan migrants and Sharing Roots of Ecuadorian migrants, among others. They have denounced the consequences of the great powers and Spanish colonialism of yesterday and today. “We know that colonialism has brought economic privileges to Euskal Herria, and we are not proud of it. Likewise, the French and Spanish have mastered our language, culture and institutions”, said the Basque Saharawi Beñat Hach Embarek.
Several activists have thrown down sculptures by pulling the rope. The murder and racism of George Floyd has been denounced this year by the demolition of sculptures that are symbols of colonialism around the world.
