- The Housing Union of Vitoria-Gasteiz has denounced that Alokabide has opened at least six eviction processes in the Basque Country. One of them will be 18 July.
The Vitoria-Gasteiz Housing Union reported a month ago that a family that had been the victim of a Alokabide scam was at risk of eviction. Even though the union managed to delay the eviction, they have announced that on 18 July, at 10:30 in the morning, they will evict the family. They have called on the public to turn to No. 64 on Salburua Boulevard on that day and at that time and to express their solidarity.
There lives a family that has a two-month-old child. As explained by the union, housing was found on a website where a total of 2,000 euros was paid: “After paying, the family learned that he was scammed when he received the eviction claim.” They added that Alokabide, despite being in a "vulnerable" situation, wants to say goodbye to them "no alternative".
As explained by the union, the Spanish Housing Law, in such situations a protocol should be implemented and social services activated automatically to analyze eviction: “In all cases that have reached the Union, neither Alokabide nor the Courts have reported the situation to the social services.” Instead, they have denounced that they “ignore” the situation of the family and behave “irresponsibly”: “In cases where families have no contract, Alokabide relies directly on judicial proceedings without activating the internal protocol.”
20.6% of evictions carried out by public institutions
What the union denounces is not an isolated case, affects many personas.Segun the data provided by the Socialist Housing Union of the Basque Country, Alokabide began in 2023 80 eviction claims and executed 50 evictions, 21 of them in Álava. They have therefore pointed out that public institutions such as Alokabide have no “will” to provide a “dignified” solution to the situations of these people: “Most people living in Alokabide’s homes have a negative economic situation.”
According to the summary of the course 2023-2024, recently published by the union, it has advised 1,055 people in the last year. It concludes that 20.6% of the eviction cases in the Basque Country are the responsibility of public institutions, as is the case with Alokabide.
