The island of elitist knowledge
- In recent months, various projects related to university education have been presented from governments at different institutional levels, showing the Bilbao of the future as a kind of city of knowledge.
At the time of turistification, it is not bad news that governments think of other types of economic activities, especially when it comes to economic activities that have as their main axis research and education, but it is difficult for all the initiatives presented to be private.
Currently, from the municipal government of Bilbao, seven projects have been put on the table: Digipen, University for the design of video games; Kunsthal, centre of superior design; As Fabrik, from Mondragon Unibertsitatea; two design schools in London; University of Navarra with different masters of architecture and design; School of Medicine of the University of Deusto. Private projects with unpayable degrees and master's degrees. In general, we must remember that we are talking about courses of between EUR 5,000 and EUR 10,000.
Meanwhile, the main campus of the public university is located 12 km from the city, following a decree created during Franco, specifically 1943.urteko, following the “University Ordination Act”. The students of the EHU-UPV have been denouncing the problems they have in getting to college for years, and every day they have to make almost an hour of travel in crowded buses. In the same way, some schools teach in barracks and the obsolete situation of some classrooms hinders the daily life of students and professors.
Thus, from the UPV/EHU a proposal for the location of the Leioa campus in Bilbao was moved several years ago, but it seems that this project is far away, especially due to the suspension of the initiative to locate the School of Medicine of the public university in the city. As private universities settle in the space of our city or in what at the time were municipal buildings, the arrival of the public university becomes ever more distant. While the Faculty of Magisterium of the UPV/EHU, located in the Arangoiti neighborhood, was transferred to Leioa, in the visible urban spaces from Arangoiti the faculties of Mondragon or the University of Deusto will be built.
The Ribera de Deusto, which some call Zorrotzaurre, was a suitable urban opportunity to carry out the project proposed by the UPV/EHU, but the government has chosen to leave the neighborhood in the hands of private education. Most citizens have opted for centres offering studies that we cannot afford, without taking into account the opinions and needs of neighbours and citizens, creating an island for elitist knowledge.
