In a joint note, the unions have recalled that the Basque Government has already announced that ambulance workers could be vaccinated this week: "Here we are to report that we are not being vaccinated. They don't call us to get vaccinated or call us to come together. We have publicly requested that a meeting be held to specify the starting date and the specific vaccination plan established." In the absence of a call for a meeting by the administration, they have announced that they have registered the call for a strike on Friday, 5 March.
The trade unions have called on the Basque Government for an "emergency meeting" and a "certain commitment to a specific vaccination plan", as well as for the "immediate start" of vaccination. If not, they have stressed that on 5 March ambulances will strike because "a frontline sector has not been vaccinated". It explains how privatization behaves in the vaccination campaign: Osakidetza workers have been vaccinated, but these represent only 1% of the health workforce. 99% of ambulance workers are outsourced and not vaccinated: "It is an incomprehensible and irresponsible criterion, both from the point of view of health and work," he added.
They say the government "excludes" them: "We don't have vaccines and we don't have a vaccination schedule. We are more than 1,500 professionals in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, we provide an essential service in Basque public health and we will not accept the discrimination of contractual insertion and not depending on the function and service we perform. We're on the front line facing COVID-19 and we feel completely abandoned."
