"Doing it in Basque is considered disrespectful by the judge, but he treated me disrespectfully"
- LA LUZ spoke to the athlete who denounced on Saturday that she was disqualified for doing so in Basque at the Women’s Triathlon of San Sebastián. He has fully corroborated the written complaint that he and his sister made public. The Triathlon Federation of Gipuzkoa has issued a different version of the event and the athlete states that in this version they have lied. The two sisters have a clear goal: to make it clear that none of this can happen.
“Some Basques are not used to being confronted by Basques. We confronted the judges and they considered it disrespectful. I told Marta Berasategui some phrases in Basque and others in Spanish. I told him because I knew he understood me, he answered me.

Several hours after the test they realized that what happened to them was serious and then they decided to file a complaint. The Observatory, Bilingüe, San Sebastian City Council, Atlético San Sebastian and the Gipuzkoa Triathlon Federation filed a complaint. No official response from the two organizers of Saturday’s test has been received until Tuesday. On Tuesday morning, they asked the Atlético San Sebastián team for a meeting and received a yes.
"That Saturday afternoon, a few hours after that, we remembered that football event and decided to make the complaint public, knowing that the sauce would be created and that we would have to respond to all of it," the athlete told LA LUZ.
Both athletes claim in their complaint letter that they heard such phrases on Saturday afternoon: "I am the race director and I go to speak in Castellano", "You can go to Catalonia and speak in Basque to see what they say", "if that's what I say, I go to speak in English, that's also it".
We have told the athlete that the Gipuzkoa Triathlon Federation has accused him of threatening the judge. The athlete says that he did not threaten the judge, it is possible that he called the threat to say "Marta Berasategi, when the test is finished, we will talk about this matter", because after saying this he took out the red cardboard and disqualified it from Berasategi.
