There will be no snow for skiing in the Pyrenees, but Canal Roya is in danger with the PP-Vox of Aragon
- Last May the Government of Aragon (PSOE) reversed with the gigantic telequabine project in the Valley of the Roya Canal of the Pyrenees, enthusiastically driven. Now the blackest clouds return to the precious natural space.
After the May elections, a coalition of the PP and Vox led the Government of Aragon and the Economic Advisor, Mar Vaquero, in the newspaper Heraldo de Aragón, said they will try to see what possibilities there are to reactivate the project, because the government sees it necessary.
The project aims to unite three ski resorts, Astun, Candanchu and Formigal, but to do so they would reduce the Canal Roya valley, denounced by all kinds of associations and experts. Javier Lambán (PSOE), president of Aragon for years, also made it clear when the project was fired: “They asked me for this from the Pyrenees and now the Pyrenees wonder.” He referred to Sabiñanigo and Jaca, the largest municipalities in the area, after their opposition to the project.
Now, on 30 September, a mountain march will be held to Canal Roya, from Formigal, convened by different associations, and in addition to denouncing the return of the project, it will be requested that the area of Anayet be declared a natural park, as “it is the only way to stop the destructive project”.
Endangered Pyrenean stations
The Canal Roya project has been accused of destructive character, but also of surrealism, considering that it is intended to be built to unite three ski resorts, when all the studies indicate that in the future in the Pyrenees there will be no snow to ski on slopes.
According to an article published at the end of August by Nature Climate Change, if the weather is heated at 1.5%, 32% of European stations lack snow. However, forecasts point to a further increase and an increase of up to three degrees in the coming decades would be very possible.
If the latter scenario were to occur, most Pyrenean stations could be threatened, as they have shown in Kazeta.eus. Three-degree heating at the heights of Pyrenean stations will endanger 98% of the stations.
The shortage of snow mentioned, all of this, has been noticeable for years in the Pyrenees. To combat this, snow cannons are increasingly being used, but this is a huge waste of water and energy and, furthermore, if this three-degree rise is met, it would be useless because it will not be cold enough to use them.
