This morning, March 18, Congress passed the amendments to the Euthanasia Act prepared by the Senate. Thus, this new law will be published in three months' time in the Official State Gazette and, once in force, euthanasia can be processed within the Basque health system.
The law adopted establishes that euthanasia may be requested by those who suffer from a "serious and incurable disease" or a "severe, chronic and impossible condition" that affects their personal autonomy and that causes them "permanent and unsustainable physical or psychological suffering".
The support of PNV, EH Bildu, PSOE and Unidas Podemos, among others, has allowed the euthanasia support law to be the majority. However, the Right has strongly protested against this law.
The international day of dignified death was celebrated on 2 November. In this regard, by means of this letter I would like to state how I see the situation in the Basque Country in this matter.
