In a communiqué, the Department for Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment of the Basque Government has reported that it has renounced gas exploitation in the Armenian well II of Subilla. The Climate Change and Energy Transition Bill was passed last Thursday in Congress by the PNV and the PSOE.
According to the newspaper Berria, initially the Basque Government showed its willingness to exploit gas in the Armenian well II, but after the adoption of the bill they have acknowledged that it makes no sense. After the new law no new permits will be granted for the exploitation of hydrocarbons. The Basque Government recalls that the gas exploitation project was born in 2011 and that there is environmental approval in favour of the project. The new law allows exploration, but not exploitation of gas, so they have decided to remove it from it.
EH Bildu and Elkarrekin We may have called the news “satisfying”. EH spokesman Bildu, Mikel Otero, has acknowledged that this is a long-awaited decision: “In the end they have accepted what we said to them some time ago. That is, it makes no sense to make a gas well if it is not possible to exploit it.” The interview conducted by Zigor Olabarria to Mikel Otero in ARGIA is a good opportunity to learn the details of the current situation.
