Is there an urgent need to mobilize for the Basque Country?
The International Day of the Basque Country (ENE) was created by Eusko Ikaskuntza in 1949, “a day to reclaim the universal value of the Basque Country and in the twenty-first century, adapting it to new changes and social challenges”. It is usually celebrated on December 3, the day of the death of Francisco Javier in memory, because, as the legend says, “his last word was murmured in mother tongue”, but today, in the cradle of Lingua Vasconum Primittiae, in the Old Kingdom of Navarra, the future of the Basque Country is also wandering.

In addition to the media resonance of Nafarroa Oinez, the harsh reality shows that in Navarre the expansion of the Basque Country is heading towards stagnation, although in the last 15 years there has been an increase. In view of the questionable situation of the Basque Country in Navarre, it is concluded that we need a deep reflection and constructive criticism. The weakness of the Basque country requires a commitment to live in Euskera: to update, improve and increase the use of the Basque language used by the Euskaldunes; and the Castellanoparlantes, with enthusiasm for learning Euskera, because the key to the future lies in the use of the Basque language.
Therefore, avoiding the Basque Country in Navarre will require a huge effort on the part of the Euskaldunes, and in order to avoid this fossilization it is necessary to increase the budgets for the Basque Country. And also that Euskera be visible in all areas of everyday life, so that Euskera becomes a cultural asset and an instrument of union for those of us who live in Navarre. In order to do this, it is essential to increase the use of the Basque Country, since, if you follow this line, in the medium term, the Basque Country will tend to obscure it. The traditional geographical islands of the northwest of Navarre and the ideological-sentimental corners scattered in the foral territory are their last witnesses.
Unfortunately, the new Foral Decree that will regulate the use of Euskera in public administrations will put an end to the valuation of Euskera in non-Basque areas. If we add to this the decrease in the number of Model D plates and the resentment of the Basque country from the PSN and Nafarroa Suma, the horizon for the Basque country is uncertain. It is therefore urgent to demand a general mobilization for the Basque people.
