The Herribiltza group has signs of entry into Donibane Garazi, placing the Euskera at the top and the French at the bottom. "A language, in order to live, needs a territory where it is used as a priority and predominant," the group said. Herribiltza is the College of Basque Citizens' Congresses, "an institution from all over the Basque Country that aims to guarantee in our hands the power to decide on the lives of Basque citizens".

They report that on more than one occasion they have asked the Departmental Council and the Casa Consistorial to prioritize the use of Euskera: 19 March, 27 May and 19 June. "Most of the political, economic, social and cultural institutions of the continental Basque Country do not give priority and preponderance to the Basque country, so they condemn our language to die," can be read in the letter sent by Herribiltza to the institutions. In this respect, the group of citizens has done what the elected representatives do not do.

This week the activity has been organised as part of the meetings organized by Herribiltza in Behorlegi.

The Basque in a critical situation, also in the interior of the Basque Country

The problem of the lack of use of the Basque country is not confined solely to the Northern Basque coast. The belief that in the typical villages of Baja Navarra they live in Basque is not, in general, true. Since 1989 we have data from the Sociolinguistics Cluster that measures the use of Euskera in the streets: six years ago the use was 14.6% in Baja Navarra, compared to 10.5% in the 2021 measurement. In general, in the Northern Basque Country, Euskera has followed its downward trend since 1997.
