Euskera also under the pandemic
For many years now, in our company, Euskera is our language. All the documents that are looking inwards and all the writings and explanations that are among us are in Basque. We have done so for years and with that we believed that the Basque Country was normal and natural in our organization; for many years the effort and work done by the company council, the management and the workers have been an example. And thanks to the collective approach that has been taken around the Basque country, it has been possible to bring and maintain the Basque country to that level. Not only for the internal staff of the organization, but also for the companies, suppliers and clients of the environment, centers of interest of the organization. We have to clarify that speaking in Basque from the very beginning means speaking only in Basque. Our writings are created in Basque, not in bilingual, because that means more work and of course because it is the most fair thing to receive the answer in the same language.

That is why we have realized that the fact that in some institutions, in the administration or in the trial only speak in Basque is a delay, since the documentation has to be translated. Consequently, it causes damage depending on the type of case, in some cases as an institution, in others as an individual; and the fear generated by this situation prevents us from speaking in Euskera.
We will look at two examples nearby. The organization has had to apply for Temporary Employment Regulations (ERTE), motivated by the current pandemic, and there is no need to explain that it needs responses without delay. From the first communication of the process, everything has been written in Spanish so that the Basque text does not delay its arrival at the Labor Inspectorate. It should be added that if it were written in Basque, most of the professionals who work in this language would face great difficulties, since they are not trained in Basque.
Our institution, after evaluating the harm that could result from the delays, has had to abandon the decision to speak in Basque previously adopted and start the ABBE process in Spanish. And it is not the first time this happens: the theme that was presented in the Labor Inspectorate as a consequence of a change in the work schedule, we also saw the need to present the documentation in Spanish, otherwise, the need for translations and the lack of knowledge of the terminology, on the other hand, would greatly delay the answer.
We can continue to mention the fears generated by the delay in individual retirement processes, but I would not add other significant data. That is why we have to find a solution to the situation.

An article published by El Correo on March 2, 2020 said: “The Basque courts have not held a full trial in Euskara for three years.” To be honest, today, to bring a case in Euskera to the court we need a large dose of militancy and puts us far from normal, due to the fears mentioned above.
However, in the same article, states that 9% of the judges have the capacity to express themselves in Euskera. So there's a place to start providing the service. Those of us who know how linguistic transformation should be carried out know that the linguistic situation is not going to change overnight. Therefore, we have no doubt that the professionals in these areas and their administrative environment will implement training plans in Euskera, step by step, in their tasks. But in the meantime, litigation can offer the means to speak in Basque safely. 9% of the judges who are able to speak in Basque do so based on this percentage. Under the COVID-19 pandemic we have no choice but to adapt the special protocols that have become fashionable so that the problems that are to be raised in Euskera are taken from beginning to end in Euskera. And, above all, a new protocol must be put in place so that the cases start in Basque, so that it does not cause delays or damage of any kind.
