The linguistic hegemony in Euskal Herria is widespread, as is the tendency learned to subordinate the Basques, but there are no initiatives against the Basque agents, and the response of the Basque cultural activity is increasingly lukewarm, engaged in the institutional path.
We Basques are second-class citizens in the CAV, as well as in most institutions governed by nationalists. In those led by the Spanish/French we are not either that, or rather, we are merely people to eradicate, concealed in the CAPV, but with disgrace in Navarre and Iparralde, one behind the other the prohibition and contempt, from the government bodies themselves.
The messages disseminated from the political power of the CAPV and its environment are optimistic: “We are increasingly Euskaldunes”, but the main indicator of the health of the language, the use of the Basque language, does not grow, and accuses the citizens of the poor evolution of use, of their “efforts”. “Institutions can’t do everything,” we’re read several times in shame.
In fact, the language policy developed by the main institutions of the CAV (with regard to the Basque Country) is very poor in most areas, starting with the Basque Government itself.
"The Basques are second-class citizens in the CAV, and in most of the institutions ruled by the Basque nationalists. We are not even that in what the Spanish/French lead"
EITB: The Basque Government awards and prioritizes the chains in Spanish without shame, devoting much less resources to those of Euskera. Clearly, the results depend on investment. In addition, the supply of cultural production in Basque is marginal. What happens in Euskadi Irratia with Basque music is amazing: in the great musical programs Basque music is totally marginal or negligible. And what to mention the chains in Spanish…
The “free” linguistic option of political representatives. In the CAV and in Navarra there are hardly any constitutionalist politicians who speak Basque on social networks, Arriola in short, Andueza very little… and period. On the contrary, all Basque representatives use Spanish, most of them more than Basque, and some only or almost exclusively Spanish. In other words, most Basque representatives make a “free choice” in favor of the language imposed on us. It does not seem to us to be the best model to promote the use of Euskera among the citizens, because…
The police are good days to choose. We are not just talking about the Spanish Civil Guard and the National Police. Although it seems to be a lie, with the Ertzaintza and with different Local Police, we have no choice but to act many times in Spanish. The Ertzaintza and the local police are mostly under the responsibility of the Basque parties, especially the PNV. Dear authorities, the fact that the police do in Spanish to the citizens is not the most effective technique to promote the use of Euskera, in our humble opinion… Can we provide many more examples, but is it necessary? The language policy in the CAV must be radically changed.
In Navarre and Iparralde, if there are no forces for this, the resistance must be organized to survive... and the agents of the CAV have much to say in this task.
There is an urgent need for the Basque institutions, if we ever leave the dependency. Euskalgintza is an autonomous and courageous activity. To those who need it, to the parties, to the trade unions and to other organisations, to tell them what is their and what is five, when necessary.
A few days ago an Euskaltzale said in the news: "We have to get committed Basque politicians... who have enough effect to move from folkloric linguistic policy to a language policy that defends the rights of the Basques."
In order to do so, we will have to organise it and promote it. They will not happen on their own.
And if we don't continue in that direction, we stay there, on the edge of the road, forgotten.
