It is true that the citizens of Hegoalde cannot even think of crossing the border... Because we can't move it normally within the province! In this case, those of Iparralde have a kilometre advantage, as they have up to 100 kilometres or freedom of movement throughout the area of the department without any justification. But as the confinement spread all over the world, so does the openness to the passage spread everywhere...
We Basques are not lucky enough to have Spain with France. When last week Paris decided to quarantine any foreign border for 14 days, protests began immediately in various parts of Europe and the resolution was soon qualified so that the French and the most important neighbours, including Britain, which is no longer part of the European Union, would not have any special obstacles when crossing borders, that is, confinement in the next stages.
Either they would not realize the events in Madrid, or they are too stunned by Pedro Sánchez and his ministers with the rest of the management of the pandemic... what happens is that it has now been reported that any foreigner entering Spain will have to spend a 14-day retreat. The Madrid authorities could say that this measure will be "probitionalised in anticipation of things being adapted in Europe for the citizens of Schengen", which will ultimately be the area of decision. But since Spain always works like this, the decision has been made public without this nuance, provoking the anger of several companies related to tourism... but not much revolt between Basque citizenship.
The French authorities have told the press – suggesting the decision of the Spaniards – that Spain surely did not want to start working on the complicated task of passing through the screening of foreigners who may enter its scope, and that that is why it would bring out that general rule. This is always the case in Spain, many Euskaldunes would say.
On the very same day, the European Commission presented the guidelines for the progressive normalisation of the crossing of the internal borders of the European Union, pointing out that de-escalation will take place in three phases and ensuring security corridors between countries in similar situations. But also in the small print of the decisions to carry out it can be at the base of the insurmountable border of the Basques, the decisions taken by Germany.
If so far Germany has set the steps to follow the other European countries on the road to alleviating the general containment, it must be known that on Saturday, 16 May, Germany is starting to speed up border controls with Luxembourg, Denmark, France, Austria and Switzerland until all obstacles with the countries of the Schengen area are eliminated from 15 June. On 15 June, however, not everyone, as the German authorities have made it clear that Italy and Spain are still particularly dangerous. The two countries do not border Germany by land and... there is also the misfortune of the Basques: If Germany abolishes controls on France, France will have to control the Spaniards, including those in the South, those in the State.
According to the large media, the main Spanish tourism companies are doing lobbying work to organise the corridors between Germany and Spain, which are so important for the entire industry organised by the German tourist at the expense of the Spanish sun. It should be a miracle that the authorities of the CAV and Navarra – do not ask about the opposition, please – carry out any lobbying work somewhere so that the people of Tafalla can reach Baigorri and Itsasu to Hernani.
