Even a quarter of Basques don’t have the habit of reading Basque media and books. The Basques consume more than the Basque press, 58.8% and 21% respectively. According to the figures, 155,000 citizens turn to the Basque press, compared to 442,000 who consume the Basque press.
In terms of television, the data indicate a better trend than in the press: 42% watch Basque TV (mainly ETB1). However, those who do not consume in Basque are more, 48% do not have the habit of watching TV in Basque.
Seven of the ten Basques are book readers: 58% of those who have read a book in the last month and 12% of those who have read the last book in a period of six months. That is, while there are 172,000 Basque readers, there are 402,000 Basque readers who turn to the books of childbirth.
Age plays a role in the habits of readers: Young people between the ages of 16 and 25 are more likely to consume in Basque (37%). However, it is important to note that the majority of young people in this age group are students and associate Basque consumption with their studies: 21% read in Basque at the request of the academic area or for work; 26% read in Basque. In free time there is a real gap: in the same age range, 34% of the population consumes books in Basque and 63% of the population consumes books in Basque.
Although the data in the music is better, it is significant how the consumption pattern has changed: the younger the music, the greater the tendency to consume it for free. 90% of 16-25 year-olds listen to music every day or almost every day. However, two out of three have eaten it for free. The concerts are also attended by young people who have filled the theatres; here too, two out of three have gone to a concert. 47% of Basques have attended a concert in Basque since last year; 15% have attended a seminary.
On the other hand, in record sales, young people do not explain the same trend: Between 35 and 44 year olds buy the most albums — 41% of them have bought a record in the last year. In general, 30% of Basques have bought Basque albums within a year. One in ten Basques bought records, but not Basque. The researchers warn of an increase in the number of inhabitants who do not buy records, since although 60% listen to music, they do not buy the works of their creators.
Although the reasons for this situation may have different reasons, the majority of respondents have argued for “lack of habit” and “lack of ease” in not using Basque. The latest sociolinguistic studies on the use of the Basque language have revealed a trend that is going from top to bottom, and several experts have highlighted that this latest report can be considered as an example.
