"Basque Wikipedia is fine in quantity; now the challenge is in quality and social inclusion"
- “The Wikidata workshop: Wikipedia, Oteiza, Commons, Chillida, Wikidata, Basterretxea and Wikipedia” is organized by the UEU within the framework of the Summer Courses. We spoke with Professor Galdór González and the person in charge of the workshop, Aitzol Astigarraga.
Has it been a workshop to document the works of the sculptors Oteiza, Txillida and Basterretxea?
More places to stay in Aitzol: The three sculptors have also been an excuse. We wanted to give this workshop a practical example. After all, what we want has been to publicize the different projects that make up the Wikimedia family and show them the ways in which they can be nurtured or cultivated. Articles can be written on Wikipedia about sculptors, works made. On the other hand, it is possible to create databases about the works and the author of Wikidata, detailed databases with their fields, their data, multilingual databases that can be used in different languages. And then we can equip all that with images and videos from Commons.
What are Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons?
To which I should like to refer: Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia. A free, free and open project. Anyone who can participate in the dissemination of their knowledge and whose goal is to make all the knowledge of the world available to everyone. Wikidata is a similar project related to Wikipedia for the exploitation and organization of data. It is used by documentary filmmakers, but we can use it in any field. Commons would generally consist of image, video, and multimedia files. They are all part of the same project, they are all Wikimedia projects and we understand them in a generality.
How are you working on all this?
More places to stay in Aitzol: We have made a general introduction to accommodate everyone, since a different audience has arrived: teachers, librarians, documentarians, people working in museums and computer scientists. In this post we explain what is Wikipedia, Commons, and Wikidata. The ALDEE associations have shown us with some practical examples of how these tools can be used in the work environment and then we have carried out three specific workshops. The first is about Wikidata, the second is about Wikidata and how to exploit it using programming tools and the third is about how to upload content to this multimedia database and then use this content in different Wikimedia projects. In the afternoon we will put into practice what we have learned and we have done the Editaton and the Hackathon.
Is the final goal of the workshop to expand Wikipedia’s food network?
To which I should like to refer: In the end, the goal is to have as many people around as possible. Putting all knowledge at the disposal of everyone is impossible without hands. For this reason, we would like to have as many hands as possible, to involve as many organizations and experts as possible in this project and to achieve as many interactions as possible. This is a project in the neighborhood and understood in this way, with more and more hands, the knowledge will be better and more practical.
What is the status of Wikipedia at this time?
More places to stay in Aitzol: Among the Wikipedias, Basque is the 31st, so looking at the general ranking and considering that Basque is a small language, we are very high. But that doesn’t make us feel good about it either. I believe that there are many gaps, that there is much to be done. The Basque community has a very active group of Wikimedians who have led the Basque Wikipedia to this 31st position. Now the challenge is to socialize it and collect contributions from people from different areas: from the linguistic area, from the librarian area, from the museums... etc.
To which I should like to refer: We are fine in quantity. We can be better because new items are always welcome, but in general we are well positioned. The biggest challenge we have is quality: we need better content, more data and more references. And that’s why we need more hands and more activity: that’s where the challenge is at the moment. On the other hand, it must be said that we are positioned well enough for the size of our language, we are tip-to-tip in the use of wikidata. We make good use of images, audio and others. But we have many projects and all the help will be welcome.
