The popular militants in Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa have not been able to decide in the last six years the governing structure of their party. The last congress was held in 2017 with the objective of ratifying the candidature of Alfonso Alonso, who officially took over Mariano Rajoy at an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors of the Basque PP. It's not a rare formula. Antonio Basagoiti and Arantza Quiroga also took the lead in the same way and a few years later a congress was held to confirm that the placement has been "democratic".
In the thirteenth earthquake on Genova Street in Madrid, the repetitions reach the autonomous presidencies. Rajoy liked the foralistic view of Alfonso Alonso, in the style of Núñez Feijóo. But not Pablo Casado. The power of the latter has been very centralist with regard to Rajoy. Married eliminated Alonso in 2020 and resurrected the figure of Carlos Iturgaiz, who had been in the shadow for fifteen years.
At the end of the Casado period, the presidency of Iturgaiz can also be close to completion. Núñez Feijóo has pointed out the need to hold a "democratic congress" in the PP of the Basque Country and to elect the autonomous president of the party, as well as the candidate for lehendakari, because both responsibilities are centered on a single figure.
If not, elections to the Basque Parliament will be held in spring, and a few months before the Basque PP will have to renew its management team.
