A homeless man is found dead in a street bank in the Azuelo Monastery of the Pamplona neighborhood of San Juan. Man's body was found on Friday night to Saturday, at 2:00 hours, and according to the first studies he died "naturally". The Spanish police investigate death.
Declarations by the City of Pamplona
The issue provokes debate because the councillor of the City of Pamplona, Txema Mauleon, said on 28 December that no one fell asleep on the street: “All persons seeking refuge have been responded to in social services.” When Mayor Joseba Asiron reached the municipal authority, he stated that his goal was to provide resources to non-neighbors. He also stressed the possibility of staying longer in the hostel. However, he stressed that in some cases there are people who do not want refuge, even if they are offered.
The councillor of the City of Pamplona, Joxe Abaurrea, has made statements on behalf of the City Hall on Saturday morning. Abaurrea announces that the resources offered to man “on more than one occasion” were: “The issue is complex. There are citizens who do not want to accept the means offered to them and cannot be forced to anyone.” It points out that improving the situation of street residents remains a priority: “The death of the weekend eviction cannot be directly related to the lack of resources.”
Mobilization of the Socialist Council
In the face of the disaster, the Housing Union of the Socialist Council of the Region of Pamplona calls for a concentration to denounce the death of man. They met in the Town Hall square at 18:00 under the motto Killer capitalism.
Trade union representative Iker Narbona has pointed out in Euskalerria Irratia that the fact is “barbarism”: “The existence of these situations is inherent to capitalist humanity”. On the other hand, it criticizes that the City Council has said that there were no tenants: "It's a brave statement. They have taken steps to improve the situation of the unemployed, but they are also being used to deny the real problem.”
