The Ethiopian Army and the Tigray People ' s Liberation Front (TPLF) have been in talks since 7 November. The news is the result of the truce agreed on day 2. The two parties meet in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, to negotiate the terms of the truce. The disarmament of the popular front and the way to secure humanitarian aid for Tigray are also under discussion. The AB is mediating from the African Union and is hopeful with the approximation of both sides.
This is not the first time that, during the two years of conflict, two warring parties in northern Ethiopia have signed a truce: they have been unilateral or bilateral so far, but have not had much impact. Now, however, it involved the momentum of talks in conditions and set a five-day deadline for starting talks. They said it and they did it on Monday, with three clear objectives: Abandon the struggles between the Government of Ethiopia and the TPLF, create a roadmap to secure humanitarian aid in Tigray and restore its services as soon as possible.
The availability of both blocks has been praised for the steps taken by Olusegun Obasanjo, High Commissioner of the Horn of Africa of the AB, in the “birth of trust”, and for the “commitment” to maintain the truce. The European Union has also concluded agreements. Sources of the Ethiopian Government have also welcomed the work of Irekia and have confirmed that the interviews should bring about a definitive ceasefire, the establishment of a transitional government in Tigray to restore its services. No TPLF statement has been received at this time.
The conflict in Ethiopia, also known as the Tigray War, is about to turn into two years of existence in the north of the country. The war was initiated by the Government of Ethiopia, attacking the TPLF. Since then, the consequences of the war have affected the entire country, although the extreme situation has occurred in the north, Tigray. The UN has frequently warned of the extreme local situation, as 5.2 million people need humanitarian aid. Of these, 3.8 million need health care. Movements have also increased considerably, exceeding EUR 4.3 million. Although most of them have been to neighbouring regions, in Sudan, a neighbouring country, they have formed camps. Little, and according to the UN, the state of health of the inhabitants of Tigray has worsened considerably, pests are spreading and malaria cases in Tigray have increased by 80% over last year.
But they do not have access to this aid, which is one of the objectives of the agreements. In fact, shortly after the conflict broke out, the roads were closed to reach Tigray and with him the way to receive humanitarian aid. The few existing humanitarian aid organizations have denounced the attacks. One of them was the UN World Food Programme: In December 2021, he reported that armed groups attacked two food deposits. He accused the TFLP attack.
