Congress approves Climate Change Act
- The first Spanish Climate Change Act was passed on May 13. The law has come forward with the support of most parties, the abstention of pp and More Country and the vote against Vox.
On Thursday, the plenary session of the Congress of Deputies passed the Spanish State’s first Climate Change and Energy Transition Act. all groups except Vox, which voted against, and pp and More Country abstained. EH Bildu and PNV voted in favour.
The law provides for the reduction of emissions of polluting gases, the non-sale of polluting vehicles by 2040 and the non-use of coal by 2050. The rule will also ban fracking. The law shall enter into force on the day following its publication in the ‘Official Gazette of the State’.
It also poses a challenge for renewable energy end-use to reach at least 42% and to achieve an electricity system that generates at least 74% of energy from renewable sources. The plan envisages measures to reduce gas emissions, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gases by 23% by 2030 and achieving "climate stability" by 2050.
"It is a law that the people need and that has been too late in time. There are threats and dangers that do not distinguish political colours, but which harm the weakest: our generation has a great duty to deal with climate change. We do not want to leave a model of unsustainable growth linked to the collapse," said the fourth vicelehendakari of the Spanish Government and Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera.
