The Spanish government withdraws its purchase of Israeli bullets
- The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, has ordered the cancellation of the bullet purchase made by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior with the Israeli company IMI Systems. The decision eases the risk of rupture in the government coalition between the PSOE and Sumar.
Already on Tuesday, the Spanish government promised to increase military spending in 2025 by 10,471 million euros, which put the political group Sumar to the dance. When it became known on Wednesday that Minister Fernando Grande Marlasca had given the green light to the 6 million euro bullet contract, all the alarms were raised.
The United Left within Sumar has been the one that has exerted the most pressure, and the political force also extended on Wednesday the threat to leave the Spanish government if this purchase was not reversed. According to media close to the coalition government, even Moncloa has not known all the details of the purchase and being uncomfortable with this situation. Finally, the President of the government, Pedro Sánchez, intervenes and orders the suspension of the operation, thus leaving Minister Grande Marlasca affected.
It is specified in the Spanish government agreement that since October 7, 2023, Spain will not buy weapons from Israel, and the United Left has relied on this to bring pressure to the maximum. Even Pedro Sánchez guaranteed from the Spanish Congress that no new purchases would be signed with Israel until it ceased its aggression in Gaza. The Spanish Government has now announced, on the basis of the general interest, that the Israeli company will be refused permission to make such an import and that the Ministry of the Interior will subsequently terminate the contract. Previously, however, in its explanations for the continuation of the operation, Grande Marlasca argued that the purchase was under way and that the suspension of the contract should also be paid to the Israeli company.
The PP has hit hard against the Spanish government. Alberto Núñez Feijoo has sharply criticized the government and said that it should comply with the contract and explain how much its suspension costs and who should pay.
