The record Spanish military spending this year
- The Delás de la Paz Center has published a critical analysis of the military budget of the Government of Spain for 2021. In it, he explained that this year’s budget of the UN Podemos and PSOE coalition government has increased social spending, but also military spending: The budget of the Ministry of Defence has increased by 6.5% compared to 2020, to reach €10,863 million. But it is the usual practice of the government to divide military spending into different headings, so that the figures go more unnoticed in the eyes of citizens. According to the Delás Centre, the sum of military expenditure distributed in other ministries amounts to EUR 21,623 million, the largest expenditure of the Spanish State in its history and 10.3% more than the previous year.
The Special Arms Programmes are the ones that have most increased military spending: This year the government will spend EUR 3,266 million on military equipment, infrastructure, construction and weapons, 30.2% more than in 2020.
The Delás report also reveals that EUR 59 million a day is spent on military accounts. Military expenditure in 2021 amounts to EUR 456 per inhabitant. The heading for military R & D amounts to EUR 861.14 million.
When security means destruction
The Delás Centre claims the need to rethink the idea of security: "We believe that the increase in military spending, especially for new weapons, shows that the priorities set are very dubious and it is necessary to rethink our idea of security as soon as possible. Rather than being linked to the state's capacity for destruction, security must be based on policies based on the security and care of people."
