On 18 June, in the public hall Luis de Ajuria of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the two crowns of the Spanish Army will take the floor. The General Alava cycle, organized jointly by the Vital Foundation, the Army and the Ministry of Defence, begins this Tuesday in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Reserve Colonel Juan José Otiñalo Viñes will offer a talk entitled "On the Roads of Peace". Francisco Lanza Molla will talk about arms control “Arms control. Security and peace for Europe.”
According to the anti-militarist movements in Vitoria-Gasteiz, “these two crowns have not been chosen randomly”. Otiñalo has been working for years at the Spanish Army War School: “No doubt the best speaker to talk about the paths of peace.” Colonel Lanza, who will talk about arms control, “is familiar with two armory specialists,” according to anti-militarist groups. Lanza's father, among others, was the director of an armory workshop. “Sister Paloma works at General Dinamics Santa Barbara de Sistemas. Head of the construction and start-up project of the Kirikkale gunpowder plant in Turkey, has participated in projects such as the Spike Missile industrialization sales programme for the Spanish army. It seems that the family knows more about its production and marketing than about arms control.”
Caja Vital and Kutxabank, “armed banking”
Caja Vital and Kutxabank were born for social purposes as financial institutions. The anti-militarist groups in Vitoria-Gasteiz denounce that Caja Vital Kutxa is responsible for the acts of Kutxabank for his participation in it. And Kutxabank is linked to the arms industry: Credits granted to some military industries (Maxam or Sener) and their participation in others (Indra) are known. This, for example, has made Kutxabank the top ten in the ranking of the ‘Spanish armed bank’ at the beginning of this decade.”
The agents of Vitoria-Gasteiz also denounce that the military initiative in Vitoria-Gasteiz is a fraud against the municipal motions of 1990, which are being developed in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Two motions were approved by the Plenary of the City of Vitoria-Gasteiz in May of the same year. In one of them, it was proclaimed "a demilitarized, democratic and just society, capable of fighting its true enemies – poverty, unemployment, lack of culture, etc.". The second asked "to avoid any military action or stop in the municipal area".
Concentration on the military
The Anti-Militarist Group of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Women Against War and Ongi Etorri Errefuxiatuak Araba, among others, have convened a concentration in the same place and at the same time as the conference will take place, in defense of a “demilitarized and anti-militaristic Vitoria-Gasteiz”: “With acts like the beginning of today, the displaced are fostered deaths. We, on the contrary, by collecting the witness of the anti-militarist city, will continue to firmly deny militarism our land and the social fertilizer so that that seed does not develop.”
On the 2023 portal, the 2022 numbers gain a special prominence, as with the change of year we always try to zero the counter. In the age of liquid realities, numbers also disappear from our additivity, often at tremendous speed, and even transform. Surely a simple attempt I... [+]
