Last June, EH Bildu, Geroa Bai and Xabier Zurekin asked the Spanish Army for the Committee on Rural Development and the Environment of the Parliament of Navarra to visit the Bardenas shooting range. The answer has taken four months to arrive, giving up the proposal.
The aforementioned parties made the request for military tests to “know firsthand the environmental consequences of this Biosphere Reserve and the Natural Park”, as explained in the weekly press conference by Zurekin spokesman Daniel Gómez Gómez. The parliamentarian has said that they are going to ask the Spanish Ministry of Defence for "explanations", as the army has not given "any reason" or "any other proposal for a date".
"Previously, in 2007 or 2018, the Parliament of Navarre has also made visits and we believe that parliamentarians and parliamentarians have the right to obtain all the information we consider appropriate. I don’t think hiding information is beneficial to society,” Gómez criticized.
This request for visit was recorded by the purple party, together with EH Bildu and Geroa Bai, after the cancellation of the motion to dismantle the shooting range. PSN, UPN, pp and Vox voted no at the plenary session on 30 May. If the proposal had gone ahead, the idea of the political groups in favour of the initiative was to put pressure on the Spanish Government, together with the municipalities of the Bardenas area, not to prolong the transfer of land ending in 2028.
It should be remembered that the polygon was opened in 1951 and that in the last 34 years popular marches have been made against it every year. During this time, several injuries have occurred and this shooting range has always been strongly opposed by environmental and anti-militarist organisations, the only one that uses real ammunition across Europe.
