Eugenio Giani’s victory is a severe blow to the Lega movement and to the intentions of former minister Matteo Salvini. As happened in January in the Emilia-Romagna region, the centre-left remains in the electoral challenge launched by Lega.
The failure in Tuscany can force the leader of the Lega to change his strategy. It is now very far away that Salvini is going ahead with his intentions to bring forward the general elections that have been taking place in recent months. Today, weaker than yesterday, is in the race to turn Salvini into prime minister. On the contrary, the Government of Giussepe Conte and the parties supporting it, the PD and the 5 Stars M5S Movement, have emerged strengthened from the elections.
In the rest of the provinces there have been no surprises, in Brands, Veneto and Liguria the victory has been for the right and in Campania the left.
In addition to the regional elections, a referendum was also held across Italy last weekend to reform the Constitution. The Italians have decided to lower 600 representatives of the 945 currently in Parliament and the Senate with 69.56% of the votes.
