Several associations of parents are working on improving school environments, but institutional support is lacking in the process. They have therefore called for the involvement of the Basque Government and the municipalities, demanding the creation of an interinstitutional bureau to address this issue.
A group of parents from 29 schools meeting in the Denon Eskola Association have set out in the manifesto the problems and limitations they have encountered so far in this task. Of these, 22 are educational centers in Vitoria-Gasteiz and another seven are centers in other localities of Álava: Salvatierra, Alegria-Dulantzi, Durana, Laguardia, LEGUTIO, Oyón and Ribabellosa.
As explained, different studies and proposals have been worked on in the work of changing environments. The process has observed aspects such as the safety of students, the state of the routes to be used to reach educational centers, air pollution, lack of natural environments, discriminatory and sexist spaces or the equipping of courtyards, among others.
These associations of fathers and mothers, "with little money but very dedication", have made changes in schools and have asked the experts for diagnosis. The scenario that has been found has not been the best. In the opinion of the agents, the environments of many centers are "absolutely unconcerned." Accessibility problems, safety problems or lack of pedagogical criteria for designing patios are some of the aspects mentioned.
Although they have transferred these problems to the institutions, they have noted the "lack of involvement" of both the Basque Government and the municipalities. They say that instead of offering aid, they have become "more difficult" and they want this situation to be "brought back". "We want cooperative, interactive, special, endearing and welcoming courtyards," they added.
Besides constituting the interinstitutional table, they have requested an analysis for the pedagogical transformation of these environments and a sustainable economic item to finance this process of change.
"We strongly believe that the outer spaces of educational centers should be the reflection of a new culture of childhood, school and community. A mirror open to the world in which it is made and is consistent with what is done,” they stressed.
