In 2022, the Ertzaintza purchased 1,387 such devices. "In the police stations I have visited, I have seen how the structures and platforms are prepared for these cameras to be loaded properly with energy and to correctly download the images inside the computers," the counselor explained.
The Basque Government has taken this step in the name of "police transparency", but, as usual, the actual use that will subsequently be made of the content recorded by the cameras can be very diverse. It remains to be seen why the authorities make use of mass recordings, but Zupiria has already announced that they will not use the images exclusively for the agents of the Ertzaintza.
"It's going to be one more resource to see how things happen and make decisions about them, both from a police point of view and from the point of view of justice," Zupiria said. "I am convinced that at many times it will also give security to the Ertzaintza, because the acts that will be carried out will be recorded and that is also important," he added.
