In previous years, Vladimir Putin was at the forefront of the parade of the year, accompanied by other world leaders, observing how the Russian army’s tank and military parade took place in the Red Square. On this occasion, Putin has conveyed to the citizens that although Victory Day is sacred to the Russians, with the pandemic the world is experiencing, it was too risky to hold such a public celebration and has limited the main act to the floral offering and to the conference to be held before the Kremlin.
However, fireworks will be launched in every corner of Russia, and warplanes will fly through hundreds of cities, including those coming directly from the Syrian base, in a large demonstration of reactors and helicopters.
On the contrary, this year there will be no celebration of the great demonstrations that are taking place every year throughout the country and which help to keep alive the historical memory among Russian citizens.
Much has been mentioned about the strength that COVID-19 has taken in Russia these days, but it is convenient to contextualize the numbers. As of 9 May, 187,859 infections (officially recognized, tested positive) and 1,723 deaths have been recorded in Russia. Although in the world the number of cases is 5, in the numbers of deaths it is 18 and in those of one million it is much further away, as it has only 12 deaths per million inhabitants.
Compare with data from Euskal Herria: with more deaths (1,884) we have no official infected than 24,658 and have left 588 deaths per million inhabitants. We can also compare France: with a similar number of infections (176,079) it has many more deaths (26,230). After all, it is surprising the number of deaths they have had so far in Russia and the number of tests they have been able to perform in Russia: In 100 Russian positives, deaths barely reach 1 (0.91%). In the Basque Country, 7.5 deaths per 100 positive have been recorded and 14.8 in France.
Despite the problems, Russia has given us a great demonstration of massive testing of COVID-19 to the West.
