Following the alleged war crimes of Butxa, on a proposal from the United States, the UN General Assembly approved the expulsion of Russia from the Human Rights Council. The Russian Council, in which 93 countries voted, received the vote against 24 countries, with 58 abstentions.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba thanked the countries that voted in favour of the ECHR for having chosen "the good side of history" and added that in the Human Rights Council war criminals "have no place".
For its part, the Chinese Government has called for ‘no politicisation’ of the human rights issue and has criticised Russia’s expulsion from the Human Rights Council. Calls for this cooperation not to be used as a means of combating: "China is against the politicisation and instrumentalisation of human rights issues and wishes to denounce the cynicism in this matter. After all, it is against the use of human rights to put pressure on other countries," said Chinese Foreign Minister Zhao Lijian.
