They want to ban the United Kingdom from seeking political asylum for people who come in kicks
- Prime Minister Rishi Suna will be presenting this week a plan to limit migration: people arriving in kicks will be sent to Rwanda or “a safe country” and will not be able to apply for asylum. In 2022, 45,000 people arrived in the country through the Calais canal.
The British Government wants to tighten measures against migrants. Government President Rishi Suna says the plan will be a tool to prevent illegal migration he will present this week. Non-governmental organisations have strongly criticised the decision.
Migrants who have so far arrived in the United Kingdom from the French coast in boats have the opportunity to seek asylum and stay in the country. Sunak wants to deny them this, they will send those arriving by the Calais channel “as fast as possible” to Rwanda or “to a safe country” and they will not be able to make an asylum request. What is more, they will in future be banned from entering the country or obtaining British citizenship, according to The Guardian.
Sunak’s new plan has generated an avalanche of criticism from non-governmental organisations and opposition parties. For example, the Migration Services have warned that the closure of the channel access will lead people to trucks. Legal migration for the UK is restricted only to Ukraine, Afghanistan and certain Hong Kong routes, as The Guardian recalls.
45,000 patrons
There are currently 160,000 people in the United Kingdom waiting for asylum applications to be approved. In 2023 at least 2,950 people have reached the Calais canal and in 2022 they have been at least 45,000, 17,000 more than in 2021. In 2022, the government launched a plan to expel migrants from the UK and send them to Rwanda, but it is paralyzed by forensic impediments.
