The controversy called "PIN" has been the extreme right's last attempt to condition public life in the Caribbean country. But what exactly do they intend to obstruct? In fact, sex education is not an optional subject, but a subject within the curriculum. However, nowadays, sexuality is not, in itself, a subject, "but a transversal subject that works in some subjects", explains Aitor Fernández de Pinedo, professor of Laudio Ikastola.
To fill this gap, educational centers organize courses to work not only reproduction, as is done in the subjects, but other important areas that affect sexuality: sexual and gender identities, diversity, violence, bullying, social networks...
Sexologist Diana Ibargutxi determines: "Within the sexual education we work the no, the yes, the models of beauty, emotions, coexistence, relationships, the prevention of abuse..."
Therefore, it is evident that the limitation of sexuality to the functioning of the genitals is a drastic reduction of reality itself. As Ibargutxi adds: "Sexuality begins at birth. It is not solely linked to menstruation or reproduction. Sexuality is present throughout the body and the skin is the largest part of the body associated with it".
Rights and opinions
Although Professor Julene Onaindia is an expert in sexual education, the debate proposed by the PIN has focused on: "It is not acceptable for everyone to do whatever they want with their family to do whatever they want. I am clear that homophobia, machismo, intolerance, hatred, aggression must not be respected...".
On the other hand, both Ibargutxi and Onaindia observe another spinal cord variable: Who is the competence to educate children? Both agree that the question is made in form maliciosa.Diana Ibargutxi clarifies that "children are not objects, they are human beings who have all the rights and freedoms they have." In this regard, Onaindia adds: "Children are not the property of their parents. Some don't want children to be free and think that denying information to children is the best way to prepare them for the world and for life." Faced with this, they both recall that there are international laws and norms, such as the International Declaration on the Rights of the Child. The Spanish Constitution also recognizes these rights in its article 27.Para both sex education is a human right, and that cannot be violated.
Reference pornography
If there is no information available on an impacting subject, children take other paths. Many adults know what it is to go to the Wikipedia website to answer your children's questions, but what they don't know is that children also use the Internet to satisfy their curiosity in many ways. And what happens when you explore the virtual field about sex? They end up in pornography.
The sexologist Ziortza Karranza makes it clear: "Boys and girls use pornography and they don't care about the barriers their fathers and mothers place. They're pirates.
Karranza himself has known in his therapies the influence of this phenomenon: "A girl told me that a boy had grabbed him by his neck in an erotic encounter and when he asked why he was doing it, he was surprised because he believed that women liked it."
Diana Ibargutxi faces the same problem if sex education is not worked: "If a vacuum emerges, young people fill it up as they can, and pornography is there. I have nothing against pornography, but it is true that the mainstream industry creates topics and stereotypes and that it must be dismantled. In this sense, when we watch superhero movies, nobody comes up with doing what they see on the screen. The same must be said for pornographite a.Con, the TV programme The coming one happens to us the same thing. It's a benchmark for young people, and that's what you should address. By pulling out of there you have the opportunity to communicate with them and to undermine prejudices."
Avoiding suffering
The far right has used a series of delusions against sexual education courses, such as accusing those who promote homosexuality and masturbation, but, in addition to the stated objectives, what is the purpose of these sessions?
According to Diana Ibargutxi, the main objective is to avoid suffering: "Accept ourselves and others as it is." It therefore emphasises that this training cannot be optional: "If you don't educate your children in respect, they can have homophobic or violent attitudes towards each other's children."
In addition, Julene Onaindia believes that this is not just the responsibility of the educational system: "There's no way to be, to love, to play, to enjoy -- that's what I want to teach my son."
Education and Classism
After the controversy called the parents' PIN, the experts perceive two motivations. On the one hand, Julene Onaindia thought: "Those who defend ideology as a means to avoid the imposition of gender ideology have not realized that the education we have received has ideology: machismo".
Despite agreeing with this, Diana Ibargutxi suspects that there is not only machismo, but also classism behind the PIN: "Those who support that, they take their children to private schools, where they will receive the education they want and they will be in a bubble, where they will be taught everything they want. However, they cannot tolerate the teaching of another reality in the public system. The extreme right cannot assimilate that being a teacher is no longer an exclusive competence of yours. So I think this is a way to end the public system. Not only do they want to connect the public education system with low-income citizens, but they want to promote their only family model."
Old and new challenges
Homophobic and transphobic aggression and discrimination are present in schools. To this old burden must be added the new realities of today: sexual relations, harassment through social networks or the presence of new technologies everywhere. All these phenomena are, in general, new and unknown to adults, but they cannot be turned away.
Therefore, instead of the Father and Mother PIN, it should be a real responsibility to offer a sex education that is continually updated and renewed throughout the education system. It is not only reasonable, but also to escape the agenda imposed by the extreme right.
