This is what a report published by a number of scientists believe, as was reported last week. However, many other scientists consider a free alarmism the tendency that links 5G to serious diseases, arguing that those who defend this line have no scientific evidence.

For years it has been debated in the public square: Can mobile phones cause cancer? In October 2018, the largest experiment on the case was published in the USA, which cost 30 million dollars (over 26 million euros). The study concluded that there was a relationship between radiofrequency radiation and tumours in male rats, but stressed that the exposure times and exposure levels experienced by the animals used in the experiment were much higher than what we can have in people using the mobile phone.

Types of radiation

The focus of concerns about the health problems that telephone networks can cause is radio frequency radiation. Any emission in the electromagnetic spectrum is in itself radiation. Therefore, radiofrequency readiation does not have to be dangerous on its own. The question is under what conditions it may have a negative effect on human health.

According to the scientific consensus approach, the key is whether radiation is ionizing or not. Any radiation other than ionizer is too weak to break chemical bonds. Within this category would be ultraviolet radiation, light, red infrared rays and low-frequency waves, such as radio. FM radio, among other things, would enter this field, as would wireless internet connections. Microwaves are an exception: although they are not ionizing, they can damage tissues. On the contrary, X-rays or gamma rays found in frequencies higher than ultraviolet rays are ionizing.

Within this differentiation, mobile telephone networks are located in the area of non-ionizing waves. That is the basis for the position of those who advocate the safety of mobile networks. However, given this difference, those who claim that 5G is dangerous, that is, the possible consequences of this cumulative effect, are aware of the effects that the accumulation of non-ionizing radiation can have on the human body.

It seems, therefore, that the debate on the subject will continue in the public square. And in the midst of all the bewilderment that the race is causing to start 5G between the world powers and big business, will it be possible to isolate the scientific perspective from other interests?
