The agents that make up the feminist movement come from the tradition of self-management: we have often used self-financing through community networks to develop different initiatives. In addition, many actors have sought public resources to implement our projects or strengthen our structures.
Feminist associations are an important asset in society. Our work is of great value, as we build a fabric to deal with relations, the system of values and heteropatriarchal violence; therefore, we are a fundamental pillar to transform society from feminism. For this reason, it is the responsibility of public institutions, through the Equality Departments, to recognize the actions of feminist agents, to provide them with resources and to support them financially if the agents so wish. But that is not guaranteed: on the one hand, because the budget for promoting feminist associationism is insufficient. On the other hand, because they join us in the pace, in the deadlines and in the suffocating bureaucracy imposed by the institutions, and that is an insurmountable barrier for many.
"We demand that the deputies and municipalities of Emakunde, INAI, Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, Araba and Navarra: Cuts should be interrupted and resources made available for the recognition and public provision of the work of feminist agents"
In recent years, we have heard equality speeches by parties or representatives of public institutions of different colours. In most cases, however, words have not been reflected in concrete public policies or in human and economic resources for their development. That is why we have often denounced the clean-up of the institutions.
It is true that some institutions and municipalities have made a great effort, both to integrate the feminist perspective into public policies and to develop projects. However, we know that these have been based on the will of individuals, who have been accompanied by many obstacles and loneliness. Therefore, we can say that, in the public institutions of the Basque Country, neither budgets nor public policies have focused on feminism. Thus, the measures that are being taken are not enough to deal with the structural violence that women are experiencing and, as a result, the administrations and governments perpetuate a system that makes us second-class citizens.
The situation of feminist agents was precarious, but the Covid19 crisis has left us in a difficult situation, blocking sources of self-financing and subsidies. We know well who pays for crises in our society, because women are in crisis for a long time. The initiatives of these feminist agents cover different livelihoods: trainers, lecturers, writers, creators, researchers, carabiners, liberates, coordinators, translators, journalists, etc. We are a broad sector and in recent months we have been in an absolutely uncertain situation, with no resources or guarantees to move forward. Along the same lines, the projects, days and meetings we had in place (some, not all) are viable by public funding, but the calls for grants for 2020 have not come and we have learned that they come with cuts.
We are therefore vigilant and would like to draw attention to the fact that the purple cleaning we have so often denounced will be more present than ever, unless, once again, in the health crisis, it is the first areas in which the social sphere and equality policies are reduced. We are not going to tolerate this kind of recklessness.
The signatories of this text demand that the Members and municipalities of Emakunde, INAI, Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, Araba and Navarra cease the cuts and make available the resources to give recognition and public money to the work of feminist agents. The activity, interlocution and leadership of feminist agents are essential if we are to continue weaving the net to generate profound changes in society.
No to feminist agents! ! !
