How did you experience the flood time?

I was with my grandmother, 91 years old. When he returned from shopping to his home, he began to hail. We live in a flooded neighborhood, but far from the river. Through the windows, I would look to the street to see if water was coming up, but in ours I was quiet. And all of a sudden, the messages and the videos that surrounded the river began to arrive. There began the fear, especially of the people. When he left, we went down to the street and saw the shattering.

These days you'd talk to a lot of people. There have been terrible passages, hasn't it?

That's it. For example, a lot of people were quiet inside the house, without realizing that the water was getting closer, and all of a sudden everything was put into the house. Call emergency services and receive “waits” from the overcrowded emergency services. Another person was in the supermarket. They observed that the water was starting to come in, looked out and saw the cars full of water. They went up to the grocery store and stayed there without the ability to move around. Many of them.

The next day, Martinez Espronceda Street was in a bad mood. There we said, “this will not be a matter of a week, to see when these streets are back to being what they were.” At the same time that there has been no personal pain in the village, I think the hardest hit have also thought “well, it could be worse. We’ll move forward.”

After the moment of physical fear, many would look at material damage. Is there a lot of drama in this regard?

Yeah, terrible. For example, at the entrance there is a workshop where tractors are sold. It's completely shattered, five tractors ran downstream, destroying their offices. In and around Martínez Espronceda there are many small businesses. A month ago, for example, they opened a hairdresser. Or an architecture office, two months ago it started working. Once the investment has been made and bets on opening a small business in a village, all shattered or unusable. Or from the sports store Aldo: he called me “the catastrophe.”

There has been a great deal of solidarity, but there have also been a few who went out to steal the next day. For example, in supermarkets or other small businesses. People are angry.

Agriculture plays an important role in Tafalla and its surroundings. There will also be great damage there.

In agriculture, all the lost crops. Most orchards too. Most are leisure orchards. My father, for example, has one, he's lost everything, but he says, "Well, I don't live from this." But in front of the barracks are some greenhouses, of those who work, and they've lost everything: plants, infrastructure, greenhouse -- the shattering has been terrible. There are lands that by their nature have not been so damaged that they could save the harvest. But since the roads are cut, they cannot reach the earth and, therefore, everything will be lost. There are isolated villages in Baldorba that cannot leave because bridges have fallen or because the roads are unusable.

It is often said that in the tragic times the best of us also comes out. Has that been the case in Tafalla?

Yes. Many neighbors spent the night helping. At 8 a.m. the following day, a lot of young people gathered in the street for help. Some of us went to the City Hall saying that we were many and trying to organize ourselves. The first was to get brooms and paddles, the city hall also got into it and we started to move back and forth. Families and friends met in the homes and around small businesses, so some of those of us who were not directly affected went to the cultural center or the pediment. You were welcome in any house... The least they told you was "thank you." Go to a house the next time you are asked if you need help. All the people have come to the streets to help, but most of all a lot of young people, I think people are very grateful.

Your emotion is obvious

Yes. We put aside the daily fights. Right now that elections have been held, you have political accounts with one another, and it has been the same way. He walked into a store and gave him just as much color as the merchant was, he needed help and he was ready. There is a nuns' residence and there has been all the people, of all colours, even if we would not have approached many other things. We have all met. And not just from Tafalla, from all around. From Mendigorría, Puente la Reina... A lot of people have called me, what can we help? Come, take the broom and walk into the street. Over the next few days, it's been a little more organized. At nine, more centralized in the City Hall to distribute according to the needs.

Solidarity has been the nicest we have brought out of this catastrophe, it has been exciting.

Is there a lot of work left and there is a lot of work left to do?

Yes, I guess so. It seems that with all that mud and all that water has been done a lot. And it's true, but there's still a lot to do. We have auzolan for long. Apart from the interior of the houses in gardens, buildings, school and others. A couple of current accounts for economic contributions have also been opened, as expenditures are high. I don't know how many weeks or months it will take us to return to Tafalla.

Some neighbors had to leave their homes. Have you come back?

As far as I am aware, including the building that had been evicted by the danger of collapse. There were two dwellings and they continue to live in the families' homes.

On the one hand, two current accounts have been opened, one for Tafalla and the other for Olite, respectively. Tractors, shovels and the like will also be very much appreciated. If everyone wants to have a good time with a shovel or a broom, there is a lot to do.
