Concentration for surveys on the land of Erdiz
- The mining company Magna wants to occupy almost 100 hectares of land in Erdiz. Fourteen localities of the Baztan have organised surveys on the project for 20 November, but last Thursday the Government of Spain has banned popular consultations for the third time. Baztan’s citizenship meets this Tuesday to claim the right to decide.
Baztan’s neighbours have called for a “mass concentration” on Tuesday to assert the right to decide on the mining occupation of the lands of Erdiz. The mining company Magna wants to occupy almost a hundred hectares and on 20 November in fourteen localities of the Baztan will conduct surveys to get to know the opinion of the citizen about the occupation. The Navarre delegation of the Spanish Government has banned popular consultations this year for the third time.
The mayors of fourteen towns of Baztan, all but Almandoz, announced on 24 October the popular consultations. However, the Spanish Government’s delegation in Navarre described them as illegal on Thursday and gave the mayors a deadline until Monday to cancel the popular consultations. EH Bildu denounces the ban they were given at the Elizondo Civil Guard headquarters. The fourteen mayors will meet on Monday morning to respond.
On the other hand, on Tuesday at 19:30 a citizen concentration will take place on the fronton of Irurita to claim the right to decide on the lands of Baztan. Popular surveys will be conducted under the motto "protest", as the media has gathered Erran.eus.
Magna mining (Magnesitas de Navarra) aims to occupy almost 100 hectares of Erdiz. The municipalities of the Noble Valley and Baztan University have an ordinance for the management of their lands, but in February of this year Magna presented the project as a Supramunicipal Incidence Plan of the PSIS, with the loss of competencies of the municipalities of the Baztan Valley. They ask the Parliament of Navarra to listen to the opinion of the citizens before the adoption of the PSIS. This year there have been attempts to consult people on three occasions, but in all three cases the Navarre delegation of the Spanish Government has taken a ban.
