This week the list of goods that the Church recorded in his favor when Aznar was president of Spain has been published. In Álava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Navarra 1,122 properties have been registered. The list is in the public consultation to allow for complaints to those persons who are considered to have property rights. ElDiario.es The media has made the list available to users on its website.
In the case of Navarre, there were 1,034 properties unregistered by the Church, between 1998 and 2015. In the case of Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, the Church recorded 88 properties, adding up the three territories. As for the Basque Country, 913 are temples of worship and adjacent buildings, and 209 are lands, houses or other goods. In Navarre there are 887 temples of worship and 147 others. In the other three territories there are 26 temples of worship and 62 houses, lands and others.
Mortgage Law
The law, promoted by Aznar’s PP, allowed the registration of buildings, apartments or farms with a single ecclesiastical certificate. After the Franco regime, the deadline for the annulment of the laws was opened, but the 1946 Mortgage Law was not contested and remained in force. The Aznar government reformed the Mortgage Law and allowed the Church to also enroll from the temples of worship. The law has been in force until 2015, according to the same source. In the list published this week only the registrations of 1998-2015 appear, those of Franco do not enter the list.
