Assange has been a refugee for almost seven years at the London Embassy in Ecuador, where he has been a refugee for ten years. Although the London authorities originally intended to formally interrogate the allegation of sexual assault in Sweden, such as Assange, Wikileaks has always said that the arrest was intended to extradite it to the United States, since Wikileaks disclosed secret and sensitive information about the behaviour of the United States Army and the authorities in general. The lehendakari himself from Ecuador has admitted that he has publicly withdrawn the political ceiling of his office to Julian Assange.

Rafael Correa, former President of Ecuador and guarantor in his day of political support for Assange, spoke very harshly about the action of his successor: "The greatest traitor in the history of Ecuador and Latin America, Lenin Moreno, has allowed the British police to enter our embassy in London and stop Assange. Moreno is a corrupt man, but what he has done on this occasion is a crime that humanity will never forget."

For his part, the President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, has strongly condemned the arrest of Assange:
