The EHZ festival calls for a "giant in the neighborhood" after the cancellation of the festival
- The festival is scheduled to be cancelled this Friday. During the afternoon session, the organizers explained that the weather forecast had forced them to make the decision.
The decision to cancel the festival was made "with great regret" by the organizers of the EHZ, but after talking with the insurance companies, the volunteers who accompany the festival and the technicians, they explained that the conclusion was clear: they could not guarantee the safety of the participants in the festival.
The organizers say that deciding what to do from now on is "everyone's responsibility" and remember that the reflection on the future of the festival is ongoing, they will be working on this task from now on.
They also stress that they will need a “solidarity swamp”, that “everyone can contribute in their own way”: "By giving a helping hand in the dismantling operations, by organising an event in their respective localities in support of the CER, or by making a solidarity contribution to our bank account," they say. "Let's organize a huge neighborhood for the EHZ."
The festival that has been organized since 1996 is not at the best economic time. In 2014 a storm ruined the festival and brought it an economic hole. In December of last year, the day that the poster of this year’s festival was presented, it was explained that the festival has a debt of 100,000 euros. To combat this, they launched a crowdfunding campaign with the aim of obtaining 30,000 euros.
In any case, it is clear that EHZ has always been more than a three-day festival: "Based on our values, Euskal Herria Direct-to-Basque must and will continue to advance; alive, united and with vigour to the future."
