Hundreds of protesters gathered in Bilbao on Saturday to condemn the project to connect Getxo and Portugalete with a motorway under the Ibaizabal estuary. The Provincial Council of Bizkaia was required to halt the project because, among other reasons, it does not "reduce greenhouse gas emissions" and "goes against official climate targets".
After crossing the streets of the capital of Bizkaia, the demonstration ended in Plaza Arriaga. In it, the Subfluvial Cloud Rodriguez NO! The platform member denounced the "negative effects" of the project: "It will increase the use of private vehicles, as well as pollution. In addition, tunnel construction will generate noise, pollution and vibrations in nearby areas."
The platform warned last week that since the announcement of the works, the cost economy of the project has increased by 10%: From 450 million to 500 million euros. It was claimed that this money should be spent on "improving public transport" and not on increasing the profits of "large construction companies".
Comprehensive protection
More than 50 agents were adhered to Subfluvial NO! Call for dynamics: among them the Ecologists in Action, the Guggenheim Urdaibai Stop platform and the unions ELA, LAB, CCOO, CGT and Steilas. "We have joined forces because we know that another way to move is possible and necessary," said the organizers of the demonstration, who assured that they will continue to mobilize until the project stops.
