Hundreds of women killed and raped in prison in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
- The United Nations has stated that hundreds of women in a prison there after the capture of the city of Goma were burned alive by M23 rebels and all killed. The UN has also denounced the use of sexual violence "as a weapon" by armed groups fighting in the north east of the country.
Vivian van de Per, head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, reports to The Guardian that the M23 23 March Congolese armed group raped and killed hundreds of women in a prison in the city of Goma on 27 January after taking over the city: "Although thousands of men managed to escape from prison, the women's module was set on fire by the rebels."
On the other hand, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, OCHA, warned on Monday that the armed groups that have been fighting in the city of Goma have also used sexual violence as a weapon. After the surrender of the army of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, M23 took control of the city of Goma, located in the region of North Kivu of the country, which according to OCHA killed 900 people in these battles.
After announcing a unilateral ceasefire on Tuesday, the rebels are still fighting in the north east of the Congo, and several videos published on the social network X show that, after advancing in the South Kivu region, they are 40 kilometers away from the city of Bukavu, with a population of 250,000.
