The unions ELA, LAB and Steilas have called for a strike to denounce the “precariousness” of the PDI. Pickets were made this morning and in the capitals at 11.30 protests. They have met in Bilbao and Donostia in front of the Education delegations of the Basque Government; in Vitoria-Gasteiz, in the Vicerrectorado.
The main demands are to put an end to the “precariousness” of substitute teachers, to restore the purchasing power of workers, to reduce the workload and to increase the funding of the UPV/EHU. They denounce, among other things, that since the entry into force of the Organic Law of the University System (LOU) substitute teachers have no exclusive dedication recognition and pay “wages of misery”.
The Coordinadora de Precarios de la UPV/EHU has launched a campaign of adherence to the strike “In just four days it has received the support of almost 400 teachers and researchers from the UPV/EHU”. "The restrictive reading of the law by the university officials means that the substitute professors stay at a maximum wage of 800 euros", they point out.
They say that there has been an increase in the "burden" of teacher education, and that no solution has been found, and that replacement exchanges have been "exhausted", as staff who are not willing to accept low wages are relinquishing these avenues of work. They state that there have been proposals to improve the working conditions of substitute teachers, but that they have always been rejected. “The only thing that has changed since the recess is the image that he has wanted to keep looking out.”
“We call on the Rectorado and the Basque Government to leave the lockdown behind and to open negotiations on solutions to turn the issue of substitute teachers and other university deficiencies,” they say.
