On Tuesday morning, seven former ETA members convicted of blood-related crimes refused to be candidates for EH Bildu in the face of the controversy over recent days by Covite and the Spanish legal sector.
A few hours later EH general coordinator Bildu, Arnaldo Otegi, spoke at a press conference with the help of the Political Bureau. They note that the seven members have decided to leave the candidature for a councilor.
In addition, for “no doubt”, he states that nearly 4,500 coalition candidates join and sign “only EH Bildu’s commitment to peaceful and democratic ways”. Remember that the candidates have literally signed the Declaration of the Eighteenth of October: “With the sincere will to remove the wounds.”
At the same time, they have denounced the “unacceptable campaign of persecution and demolition” carried out in the electoral environment by certain sectors of the Spanish right, as well as the adherence of other forces to this campaign “by negligence, by simple political and electoral interests”.
He stresses that it is “almost inevitable” that reactive sectors have this kind of behavior, but that EH Bildu has a responsibility to do so: “It should not be an excuse for not making our reflections.” They state that the independence coalition’s obligation is to mitigate the effects of the sectors involved and commit to: “To reaffirm our willingness to move forward in the future, and from diversity and disagreement, so that impotence does not arise in other sectors willing to move towards coexistence and political normalization.”
Finally, Otegi has addressed Basque citizenship and stated that he will “fully trust” in interpreting the steps and commitments they have made in recent years to overcome the previous cycle and achieve a “future of peace and absolute freedom”.
EH Bildu says that we must open the way to increasingly democratic and transformative governance models, and that they must mark an important part of the popular agenda: national recognition, the ability to decide the future, territorial cohesion and competence.
The Victims of Terrorism Association, Covite, which denounced the matter, has said in a statement that it is good news that seven former prisoners have been resigned, although it has denounced that 37 others will not do the same. "It is a victory, not of democracy, but of Covite, a humble association of victims, who denounced this immorality."
Covite denounces that 37 other candidates have not done the same. "It is true that for the victims the cases of the murderers were the most worrying and painful, but there are still 37 councillors who in EH Bildu's lists do not hesitate to take charges if they get through the elections; being part of ETA, having collaborated in all the crimes caused by that terrorist organization."

Spanish citizens have been invited in recent days to the elections, to the members of boards, parliaments or municipalities, to the renewal of these institutions, and now all of them, in the analyses, in the calculations, are in the hands of who the power will fall, with whom it... [+]
The PSN multilingual electoral cartel has ignited fire and pain. "It takes laughter in Navarre to ask for a vote in eight languages in 2023, excluding Basque. Vultures. Lettuce. Not even to fake."
