In Gasteiz, where 75% of the Alavese population lives, the surveys predicted that competition was going to be between the PNV and EH Bildu, but it was finally between EH Bildu and the PSE. The list of Rocío Vitoria won thanks to the difference of only 1,000 votes; EH Bildu has won 7 councillors and the PSE 6 (matching the number of councillors of 2019); they have also won 6 votes the PP (winning one) and the PNV (losing one), although they have been a little lower. The Podemos coalition has won 2 councillors. At the moment it is difficult to detect who is going to acquire the mayor and how the municipal government will be formed.
In Laudio (17,000 inhabitants) and in Agurain (5,000) EH Bildu has taken the first place to the PNV, turning the results in both on the very small side: In Laudio the coalition won 29 more votes than the PNV and 7 councillors (2 more), and the PNV 6 (one less); in Salvatierra voted 55 votes to the PNV, obtaining 7 councillors (one more), councillor who lost the PNV (6). Amurrio was the only large municipality (10,000 inhabitants) that managed to maintain the PNV, with the results of 2019: The PNV has won 8 councillors and EH Bildu 7.
In Iruña de Oca (3,500) everything remains the same. In the municipality that historically votes for the PSE, this party has received the most support and has won 4 councilors, 3 from the PNV and 2 from EH Bildu.
In Oyón, the most populated municipality of Rioja Alavesa (3,400), there has been a spectacular turnaround: EH Bildu has won 5 councillors winning 3 to the detriment of the PNV which is no longer the most voted list (3 councillors, one lost). We will have to see what pacts happen, because the PP has achieved 2 councillors (as in 2019) and the PSE 1 (one lost).
In Joy-Dulantzi (3,000 inhabitants), the PNV has been the first candidate (5 councillors, two more) for independent candidature (4 councillors, the same results as in 2019).
As for Treviño County, Treviño's independent candidacy regains an absolute majority by repeating the number of councillors (6). In Arganzon, in 2019 the sovereign left won a historic victory in the county that is legally the territory of Burgos, but in 2023, despite the fact that EH Bildu has obtained the same number of councillors (3), the PNV has won the first place and the absolute majority (4 councillors, one more).
EH Bildu wins elections, PNV first force in more city halls
Undoubtedly, EH Bildu has been the great winner of the municipal elections in Álava. In addition to raising votes, in three of the four most populous municipalities has been the first force, and for the first time it is the most voted force in the capital: the historic victory. The other side of the coin is the PNV, the main loser, especially for the results of Vitoria, but also for the second stop at Salvatierra or Llodio. The PSE maintains it in general and the PP rises somewhat. PNV has been the first force in most municipalities (25), EH Bildu the second (17), PSE in three and PP in two.
Abstention
The result has been conditioned not only by the votes cast, but also by the votes cast. In Vitoria, the PSE, the PP, the PNV and Elkarri have lost their votes on 2019. EH Bildu was the only one who grew very modestly (300 votes). In Álava, PNV, PSE and Elkarri have lost votes: and wins EH Bildu (3,000), PP (1,000) and Vox (2,200). Abstention has increased by 17% (from 34% to 40%) in Álava, confirming the trend in recent years. Apart from the thousands of older Alaveses without voting rights, 6 out of 10 citizens have gone to the polls and 4 have not.
