Gernika agents have organised numerous activities in the days leading up to the anniversary. Under the title "Gernika as a Cultural Heritage: Expression and Legislation", the graduate in Art History Hegoa Ibazeta offered a lecture, a round table composed of Edorta Jimenez, Felicita Lorenzo and Iñaki Sagarna under the title "Marta, Hemingway and Gernika" and, to name one, an X-ray organized by Sarek:
There are at least two exhibitions: one in the House of Culture, until May 16, called "Azken Bidaia", by the artist Maitane Azurmendi; and another in the Elai Txiki room, exhibition of images of the Civil War selected by journalist Iñaki Berazadi, entitled "Images to better understand the Civil War in the Basque Country". Azurmendi's work calls, among other things, for Picasso's work "Guernica" to be brought to the Basque Country.
Spotlights for Spain
The main novelty of this year, if there is anything new, will be in the delegation of the Government of Spain. The attitude of last year, which he sent, as never before, to the Secretary of State, to the almost null presence of the Spanish Government in the events of the anniversary of the Gernika massacre, was also special. For this year, for the first time in history, there will be a minister in tribute. It will be Félix Bolaños, Minister of Government Presidency.
Two may be the reasons for raising the level of representation: one, which is only one month for the municipal and foral elections, to be held on 28 May; and the other, the message of Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski to Spain in April of last year, in relation to the Gernika massacre. Zelenski visited several parliaments to seek protection from Ukraine. Referring to the Eastern War, he said in the Spanish Parliament, "It looks like we are in Gernika in 1937."
