You may not know, but only 5% of the food consumed in CAPV is produced there; that is, the remaining 95% is produced, distributed and consumed according to international circuits, that is, within the capitalist, colonial and techno-industrial model. This has structural consequences, both in the territories where production is carried out and in our territory. On the one hand, it condemns impoverished countries to industrial food export production, promoting a model that enhances dependence. On the other hand, it causes the technical disappearance of our agricultural sector, leaving food security at the mercy of international flows, which leads to the degradation of our health and the acculturation of our society.

As you can see, COVID-19 is not the only epidemic in our territory. Moreover, we are convinced that the situation mentioned above is the essential context that has allowed the spread of this (and others) virus, the framework of global capitalism.

In recent years, however, there are many people who, faced with this model, are building local proposals. Through the new organisational models created by producers, agricultural unions, social partners and consumers, a model is being built that is responsible for the relationship with the territory, the local economy, health and local culture. These proposals claim the sovereignty of peoples and carry out a new social, economic and environmental model, creating a plural and productive social movement, increasingly powerful at the international level.

In Egia we started vaccination with a citizen to deal with these pandemics; after the lockdown, we deepened food sovereignty and, through Azoka Txikia, which aims to weave the social relationship.

The Mercadillo began to fertilize in times of confinement. Also came to Egia the discomfort that caused the confinement in our farmers, as most of the commercialization points were suspended from one day to the next and the process of organizing the neighborhood's consumers began when the agricultural production remained unknown where to locate. Initially, collective requests were made from mouth to mouth through the consumption groups. Then, some producers began to come every Monday: milk and dairy products, then eggs, then bread, and little by little it is becoming a habit to meet us every Monday afternoon with the neighbors while making a weekly purchase; a semi-idesiert square, making our own bread and giving color and life to the neighborhood. By the way, by the mouth of the producers, we have the opportunity to know the details of the production of the products we consume. It helps us to know the hard work behind the product and to become aware of the real value it has.

But this fair not only responds to an emergency situation, but it is a process of long encouragement against the structural problems that we are promoting in Egia. The fair is the seed of a process of sovereignty that is woven at the neighborhood level and that we hope that, despite starting with food, it will extend until we collectively meet our needs. Because it is the most effective vaccine against the pests we suffer, which is the one that will own our daily lives and that will be able to take our future into their hands.

Get ready and get our vaccine! A dose should be taken every week and improvement should be noted from day 1. It takes little effort to get out of that ‘comfort’ imposed by the capitalist model, but it has positive side effects. You will not regret it!
