The Basque law of police abuse has the green light of the Supreme Court
- The law that could allow the existence of victims by police forces to be recognised between 1978 and 1999 will continue after the Supreme Court has rejected the appeals of pp and citizens.
The Basque Government will continue to press ahead with the Law on Police Abuse, following the approval of the Spanish Supreme Court. Thus, the pressure of the sectors of the Spanish right has failed, which have rejected the resources presented by the senators of Citizens and of pp.
With the adoption of this law, the way is open for the recognition of victims. On 10 July 2018, a valuation commission was set up in which the renowned forensic doctor Paco Etxeberria was among its members. Although it has held informal meetings, it has not yet begun to analyse the requests received and interview the victims until 17 September, once the July judgment against the Citizens’ appeal has been known.
