As can be seen in the newspapers, since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic the leaders of the Basque Government have tried to reassure the population by saying that Osakidetza does more tests than anywhere else. Because it is known that the World Health Organization has always mentioned among its main axes of the COVID-19 control strategy the massive testing of citizens, specifically, that, in addition to isolating any suspected case (which has been done in China, but not here), every person who has been in contact with that suspect or sick should be tested to isolate people who, despite suffering from the plague, are not spreading the virus.
This is something that every citizen knows is not the case throughout the Basque Country: today is the day when all the professionals who work or are working with coronavirus patients are still not testing, think about all the other contacts... However, the Basque Government wanted to reassure the citizens by sending a message against what has happened. On 18 March, just on the days when Spain set the state of alarm and began the lockdown, Osakidetza stated that 1,837 tests per million inhabitants had already been carried out in the Basque Country, "while the European average is at 350 tests". On 2 April it was the lehendakari himself Iñigo Urkullu who revived the idea:
And on Thursday, 23, Health Advisor Nekane Murga has reiterated that the CAV is above the European average in testing.
However, physicist Eneko Axpe, who works at Stanford University and NASA, has shown that it is a very small way to measure the adequacy of the management strategy with the tests. He explained the account with two supplementary graphs better than the longest article:
The second table shows that in the CAPV – and everything points to Navarre – very few tests have been carried out in proportion to the large number of people affected by COVID-19. Of course, yes, but what the authorities do not want to recognise citizenship and what we do not ask for citizens to explain with sufficient intensity.
The table shown by Atxa, with the data obtained from official sources, draws attention to the presence of those at the top of the table and those at the end. Because it matches the list of world statistics on the number of coronavirus deaths of 1 million citizens. In the CAV, Belgium is the country with the highest number of deaths per million deaths worldwide.
Little Covid-19 is shaking a lot of things in our day to day and it's obvious that it's going to change a lot more. Meanwhile, both our rulers and, probably, civil society believed that we and our health care system were up to Germany or Austria -- the plague has brought it into the air.
