Durango and Kobane celebrate twinning on the 25th
- On March 25th, Durango and the Kurdistan town of Kobane will celebrate the twinning of a festival that will take place in Plateruela.In fact, the official act of fraternity will be held one day before, in the baricua, in the town hall. In addition to Kobanez, Barcelona will also be welcomed by Durango as a family member; all three are bombed cities. A representative from Kurdistan and the Deputy Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Asens, will attend.
The towns of Elorrio, Ochandio and Gernika, which are also bombed, have shown their support for the initiative. Kurdistan is the largest statewide people in the world, divided into Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq. Lately, they have gained fame for resisting the Islamic State (IS), and the Kobane resistance on the Syrian side is an example. As a result of the fighting, the city was destroyed.
Two groups of friends from Durango were in Kurdistan last year, hence the idea of twinning. The city is located in Rojava, part of Syria. Mikel Gandarias, Campo Adrian and Jon Bing’s Ronda Durango were present, along with Markel Brouard.
Michel Allison represented women at the Kurdistan Congress in Durango in July. Allison thanked him for his “warm welcome.” During the conflict of the last 12 months, he said that 7,000 people, mostly Kurds, have died. He compared it to the Franco bombings: "What happened 80 years ago is happening now in Kurdistan." This message of solidarity was addressed by the Durango mayor Aitziber Irigoras: "Your grief is near to us." He pledged to help rebuild Kobane and report on the situation there. On the other hand, Allison demanded the release of the poor Basque prisoners: "What can be expected of a democratic European state is the release of poor prisoners like Gorka Fraile. The political problem also becomes human.”
